NEXT MOVE

A platform for independent choreographers to imagine, test and realise new possibilities through movement, NEXT MOVE has been part of Chunky Move’s ongoing commitment to commissioning adventurous now work, creating opportunities for artists to challenge conventions and expand the possibilities within contemporary dance. In its original 2008–2018 iteration, NEXT MOVE commissioned eleven world premieres and supported the trajectory of significant choreographic voices including Stephanie Lake, Antony Hamilton, Jo Lloyd, Melanie Lane, Atlanta Eke and James Batchelor.

Now, in 2026, the program returns.

NEXT MOVE gives independent choreographers the space, support and infrastructure to create a new work fully produced by Chunky Move.

We are excited to reactivate this vital, continually evolving program, investing in independent choreographers to take creative risks, develop bold new ideas and shape the future of contemporary dance.

What comes next?

NEXT MOVE returns, supporting independent artists as they develop bold ideas and push the boundaries of contemporary dance.

Chunky Move’s flagship platform for independent choreographers returns in 2026 with NEXT MOVE, an exciting double bill of new works by Harrison Ritchie-Jones and Samakshi Sidhu. Bringing two distinct choreographic worlds into the studio, Ritchie-Jones and Sidhu explore physical virtuosity, surreal storytelling and the body in relation to ecological systems.

Chunky Move is proud to reactivate this vital, continually evolving program in response to the needs of the dance sector with this exciting double feature.

NEXT MOVE roars back to life from Tuesday 10 November to Saturday 14 November at the Chunky Move studios, Southbank VIC
