Glow

Marking the 20th anniversary of Glow, Chunky Move presents a special one-off season of the company’s award-winning 2006 work Glow – a landmark production that set a new precedent for the global impact that could be achieved by an Australian contemporary dance work.

We’re honoured to welcome original cast member Sara Black (Mortal EngineAssembly), alongside current Chunky Move dancer Melissa Pham (U>N>I>T>E>D4/4) and independent dancer and artist Layla Meadows for a limited season of 13 performances as part of the inaugural Australian Dance Biennial during RISING.

Glow is an intimate exchange between solo dancer and machine. Movement is tracked in real time by luminous beams of light using a pioneering motion-tracking system designed by acclaimed German artist Frieder Weiss. Originally choreographed by Gideon Obarzanek, Glow toured to prestigious festivals and venues across more than 40 major cities worldwide between 2006 and 2012.

Glow features costume design by Paula Levis, who has created costumes for more than 14 Chunky Move works since 2003, including Token Armies (2019) and 4/4 (2023). Sound composition is by Luke Smiles / Motion Laboratories, creator of six sound designs for Chunky Move between 1998–2010, and Ben Frost (Mortal EngineBlack Marrow).

For its 2006 premiere season, Glow received a Victorian Green Room Award and multiple Helpmann Awards, including Best Dancer for Sara Black.
