Deanne Butterworth

Deanne studied a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) 1993 WAAPA and works as a performer, choreographer & teacher. For over 25 years she has shown work across many platforms including, Next Wave Festival, NGV, Dancehouse, Lucy Guerin Inc., Melbourne Fringe, Dance New Amsterdam (NYC), Hong Kong (with Jo Lloyd), WestSpace, Bus Gallery, Ian Potter Museum, Carriageworks, Temperance Hall, MONAFOMA and more. Her work traverses public and private spheres to include incidental performances in the everyday and the role of the spectator. It has been situated in galleries, film, theatre, museums, & outdoors. In 2017-2019 she was a studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary creating works for live performance and video. She has worked with choreographers Phillip Adams, Rebecca Jensen, Shelley Lasica, Shian Law, Jo Lloyd, Sandra Parker, Brooke Stamp, amongst others. Her most recent collaborative work, the highly lauded DOUBLE DOUBLE was created with Jo Lloyd, Evelyn Ida Morris, & Tina Havelock-Stevens and has been performed at Ian Potter Museum of Art (2019), Liveworks (2019), and MONAFOMA (2020).

Other work includes: Overture, by Jo Lloyd, Melbourne International Arts Festival; All Day And All Night, by Sandra Parker, Sarah Scout Presents, (2018), Moving Mapping, NGV Triennal Extra, (2018); Departed Acts performance/lecture, MPavilion (2018); choreographer & performer for Linda Tegg’s Ground video for Venice Architecture Biennale (2018); Interlude, Spring 1883, Hotel Windsor (2016), Siteless Now, NGV (2014). Deanne has worked with international artists Maria Hassabi and Eszter Salamon in works presented at ACCA and Abbostford Convent,  and performed in the work of artists Damiano Bertoli, Bridie Lunney, David Rosetzky, Linda Tegg, Sally Smart, & Justene Williams.

During January-April 2021 Deanne was resident artist at The Pavilion studio, Fitzroy Gardens undertaking choreographic research, informal showings, and public performances in a working period called ‘Open Effort’.
