DEEP DIVE THE ARCHIVE

In a speech to mark the launch of Chunky Move, then-Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett described the company as “provocative, innovative, daring and very, very physical.” He hadn’t seen any of the work he was describing, but when he did he admitted he was understandably miffed at the result. There is a strain of contemporary dance that is apolitical, abstract and easily digestible. Chunky Move has never been that. – John Bailey

In this, the company’s 25th year and one that for many reasons will go down in history, we began a collaborative process of collating records and documentation to honour the legacy, people and works of Chunky Move. And today we launch https://cmarchive.net/

The best an archive of dance can be, is to exist as an ever moving container of ideas, exchanges, experiences, memories, practices, pictures, data, and other things, that intersect with actual people, places, politics, fashion, gestures, style, passions, demands etc. We hope the Chunky Move archive is a two dimensional layer of this rich tapestry, that seeks to extend out like a web over time, folding and stitching the artistic work and lived experiences it has influenced, and will continue to influence and inform, as a moving compendium, a restless work in progress. – Antony Hamilton, read more

We hope you enjoy deep diving into this archive and trust it will transport you back to 1995 where it all began.
