Class Participant Nikki Henningham on the value of Chunky Move Public Programs
‘Contemporary dance, as I am learning and doing it, is a way for people who live in their heads (like myself) to learn how to express stuff through their bodies. It’s physical, it’s challenging, it isn’t exhausting, but it is liberating!’ – 50+ Beginner Series Participant, Nikki Henningham.
Chunky Move offers unique experiences to over 400 school students across Australia through dance workshops, school programs and school holiday intensives. But that’s not all! We are dedicated to inspiring all dancers – from the next generation of young movers to those over 50 who are getting back into their groove. We spoke to participant of our 50+ Complete Beginner Series, Nikki Henningham to discuss the value of our public programs at Chunky Move Studios.
What inspired you to join Chunky Move classes?
I went to the show Common Ground and was browsing the Chunky Move website afterwards when I saw that the company was offering classes for the general public. When I saw that there was a class specifically designed for beginners over 50, and that the price was really good value, I was convinced to give it a go. The opportunity to dance like there was no one watching – what did I have to lose?
What is it you enjoy most about contemporary dance?
As an audience member, I find contemporary dance challenging, but I do love how seemingly unstructured it appears! Learning the basics through doing it myself has demystified it for me and I’ve gained an appreciation for what the professionals are doing. It’s hard to explain, but it’s like a mindfulness class on steroids! Contemporary dance, as I am learning and doing it, is a way for people who live in their heads (like myself) to learn how to express stuff through their bodies. It’s physical, it’s challenging, it isn’t exhausting, but it is liberating!
How do you feel during your dance classes?
In a word – happy! The classes are FUN! I think, as adults, we forget how to play, and one of the great things about these classes is that for an hour and a half on a Thursday evening, the group gets a chance to play and make believe. I also feel respected. Our teacher is generous, enthusiastic, funny and, really importantly, respectful. And at the end of class, I feel energised. It’s great exercise, and I feel motivated to move more.
Chunky Move relies on the support of its generous donors, what does being supported by the Chunky Move community mean to you?
If I think about it, I probably wouldn’t have considered signing up for the classes if they weren’t a Chunky Move offering. There is a definite cachet associated with the brand, and I guess knowing that you are being taught by some of the best in the business is reassuring, and something to brag about!
