CHOREOLAB 2020
Chunky Move is excited to announce CHOREOLAB 2020 featuring Osaka based iconoclast performance group Contact Gonzo.
CHOREOLAB is Chunky Move’s professional development workshop program. Run annually, a visiting international guest artist or collective conduct a one to two week workshop for a group of local artists with significant experience working in dance or performance. Participation in the workshop is free for selected artists who can nominate their interest via an EOI process. In 2020, CHOREOLAB will run as part of Asia TOPA from February 17 – 22.
CHOREOLAB 2020 will engage participants in Contact Gonzo’s powerfully balanced elements of performance art, street fighting and dance. Calling on extreme physical strength, agility and trust within the group, the workshop will conclude with a public outcome, together with the members of Contact Gonzo.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Contact Gonzo has a unique type of performance that involves constant physical contactin forms that sometimes look like street fighting and sometimes dance. The places they perform are equally unique including parks, on the streets, in woods, in nuclear shelters or underground malls. Their form of improvisational performance grew out of the experiments of dancers Masaru Kakio (presently involved in other activities) and Yuya Tsukahara using techniques of the “contact improvisation” style and the Systema style, which is often referred to as a Russian style of Aikido.
To apply for CHOREOLAB 2020, please read the terms and conditions and complete the application form via link below. Strictly limited places available. EOI closes on the 15th of December 2019.
Please note, Contact Gonzo’s work requires an extreme level of physicality and participants are asked to ensure they have personal accident and injury insurance cover to take part in the workshop.
Choreolab is presented by Chunky Move in partnership with Asia TOPA.
