Chimene Steele-Prior & Contemporary Beginner Classes
We sat down with Chimene Steele-Prior to hear more about their upcoming contemporary beginner class commencing this June.
What can students expect from your classes?
A combination of ‘follow on’ or led movement as well as several short choreographed phrases focusing on particular aspects of technique, or parts the body. The start of class is a time for each individual to open up their awareness to their body and to the space. At the end we spend time on a longer dance phrase. There is always good music – though eclectic in choice. Recent playlists have included INXS, David Bowie, Imagine Dragons, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Taylor Swift, Sia, Garbage, The Weeknd, Beirut….
What makes your contemporary classes unique and what do you hope people will feel from your class?
While its important people can learn and build correct technique over time, the most important thing to me is that people leave having had fun, ideally sweaty and with a smile on their face. Over time I hope people develop a greater appreciation and trust for their body that presents itself in a sense of confidence in both themselves and their body.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at Chunky Move?
I love the community that exists within Chunky Move. It’s wonderful to connect with many different people, build friendships and watch friendships develop between others through a shared experience of dance.
I love sharing my joy for dance. Despite my many years of training and teaching, it has not dulled and I enjoy recognising the expression of joy in others.
What is it about dance that inspires you?
Dance has always felt like magic to me. It has the potential to transform a person and a space. I believe dance is for everyone and everyone can dance.
