Audio Described performances and Tactile Tours
Chunky Move are proud to work with Vitae Veritas to provide Audio Description and Tactile Tours to enhance the live performance experience for people who are blind or have low vision.
Audio Description (AD) provides additional narration that complements the performance. Chunky Move have provided AD in various forms for different performances, including narration being transmitted to audience members via wireless headset receivers, and audio describer guides providing one-on-one tailored descriptions and sighted guiding for works where this approach is suitable, such as interactive, roving or outdoor performances.
Tactile Tours are often held 30-45 minutes immediately prior to a performance, and give audience members a chance to experience key elements of a performance including costumes, props and set via touch, and sometimes other senses including scent. Sometimes we offer Tactile Kinaesthetic Tours, in which attendees are invited by the choreographer to try out some of the movement performed by dancers in a show, or experience moving or mechanical set pieces. Tactile Tours and Tactile Kinaesthetic tours are valuable opportunities to acquire physical and sensory information which can be recalled through body, mind and muscle memory during the proceeding audio described performance.
We aim to offer Audio Description and Tactile Tours wherever possible to complement our performances, which are often multisensory and/or immersive. We also aim to create screen reader-friendly Access Guides for performances, to provide further information about a show or accessing the venue. We’re always happy to hear feedback from people who are blind or have low vision on their experience of our performances or these services.
